There's a hard reality for CMOs: few are seen as enterprise leaders.

Marketing, by contrast, tends to run on campaigns, launches and big moments. Sometimes they deliver extraordinary commercial results. But they're hard to forecast, harder to repeat, and almost impossible for a non-marketer to evaluate.

That's the gap.

It isn't about talent or creativity. It's about how marketing presents itself as a function.

The CMOs who break through don't do it by being louder or more strategic. They do it by changing how marketing operates. They introduce cadence, measurement and accountability that the rest of the C-suite already takes for granted. Creative excellence matters more than ever - but it sits on top of consistent performance, rather than compensating for its absence.

This is marketing's moneyball moment.

The original Moneyball insight wasn't that data beat intuition. It was that a system built on evidence could outperform one built on gut feel - even with fewer resources.

The same logic applies here. CMOs who can show what's working, what it costs, and what it returns build something far more powerful than campaign success. They build operational credibility, which is what turns marketing influence into enterprise authority.
